About Rumford and Mexico
The Androscoggin River forms the boundary between the two towns, and the Swift River joins it at Mexico. Rumford was settled in 1774 as New Pennacook and incorporated in 1800; Mexico was incorporated on February 13, 1818.
Rumford Falls, also called Pennacook Falls, in the center of Rumford, is often described as the largest waterfall east of Niagara, though dams divert much of its water for most of the year. Rumford is also the birthplace of Edmund Muskie, Maine governor, U.S. senator and secretary of state.
