CBD and CBN, explained
Both are cannabinoids, natural compounds found in the hemp plant. Here is what each one is, where it comes from, and how it shows up on a label.
CBD cannabidiol
- What it is
- One of the most abundant cannabinoids in hemp. Most hemp grown for extracts is bred to be high in CBD.
- How it forms
- The living plant makes CBDA. Heat during processing turns CBDA into CBD.

CBN cannabinol
- What it is
- A cannabinoid found in smaller amounts. It was the first cannabinoid ever isolated, in the 1890s.
- How it forms
- THC breaks down into CBN over time, with exposure to air, light and heat. In hemp products it is concentrated or converted from hemp extract.

A detail from the chemistry: CBD has exactly the same atoms as THC, C21H30O2, arranged differently. CBN has four fewer hydrogen atoms, which is what forms as THC breaks down.
How they form
From one parent compound
Hemp starts with CBGA, sometimes called the parent cannabinoid. The plant turns it into other acids, and heat and time do the rest.
Simplified. The plant makes the acid forms (CBGA, CBDA, THCA). Heat during drying and extraction changes them into CBD and THC. CBN forms as THC ages.

New Mill is a medical dispensary, so every purchase, hemp CBD included, needs a valid medical cannabis certification. Many certifying providers offer appointments online, often the same day. Bring your written certification and a photo ID.
New Mill serves qualifying patients 18 and older, from Maine or visiting from another state, with a valid medical cannabis certification, and registered caregivers 21 and older.

Hemp CBD and CBN at New Mill
What is the difference between CBD and CBN?
They are two different cannabinoids. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids in hemp. CBN (cannabinol) forms as THC breaks down over time and is found in smaller amounts. Each product lists which ones it contains and how many milligrams.
Do these products contain THC?
They are made from hemp, which by federal law has no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight. Full-spectrum products can carry trace amounts. Ask our staff to see a product's lab results.
Do I need a medical certification to buy hemp CBD here?
Yes. New Mill is a medical dispensary, and every purchase needs a valid medical cannabis certification and a photo ID.
