Andover sits north of Bethel in the Ellis River valley. Route 5 follows the Ellis River down to US Route 2 at Rumford Point, and from there Route 2 runs west through Hanover and Newry to Bethel and New Mill.
About Andover
Andover's land was bought in 1788 by owners mostly from Andover, Massachusetts. The town was incorporated as East Andover in 1804 and renamed Andover in 1820.
On July 11, 1962, the Andover Earth Station sent the first transatlantic television signal, by way of the Telstar satellite. The Lovejoy Bridge, built in 1868 over the Ellis River in South Andover, is Maine's shortest covered bridge, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the town.
