Newry was incorporated in 1805 and named for Newry in Ireland. Its villages are Newry Corner, North Newry and South Newry.
The Sunday River Bridge, known as the Artist's Covered Bridge, has spanned the Sunday River since 1872 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970.
In Newry, Route 26 leaves US Route 2 and follows the Bear River northwest through North Newry.
