About Norway and Paris
The town of Paris is the Oxford County seat, and the county courthouse moved from Paris Hill to South Paris in 1895. Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first vice president, was born on Paris Hill in 1809.
Norway was incorporated on March 9, 1797. Once called America's snowshoe capital, it made snowshoes that went on Peary's 1909 North Pole expedition, and after a fire destroyed much of downtown on May 9, 1894, Main Street was rebuilt largely in brick.
